继2015年推出《新加坡华人通史》中文版后， 新加坡宗乡会馆联合总会终于在前日正式发布了英文版《 新加坡华人通史》（A General History of the Chinese in Singapore），拓宽受众群的同时，也为华社历史带来另一审视的角度。
《新加坡华人通史》的中英文版是继1923年宋旺相编著的英文史书《新加坡华人百年史》（One Hundred Years' History of the Chinese in Singapore）之后，整理本地华社历史的又一重要著作。两本中英文版可以相互补充，帮助读者更进一步了解这段丰富的历史。
英文版包括许多新章节
由擅长新加坡古代史研究的国大客座教授柯宗元及宗乡总会学术委员会主任柯木林共同担任主编，这本历史巨作共有逾900页，集合了26名作者和七名翻译员的38篇文章，这也是难得的一部由新加坡人撰写的新加坡华社历史。
柯宗元强调，英文版并不是原版的翻译本。新书包括了许多新章节，例如有关新加坡中华总商会、南洋大学、海峡华人，以及上世纪50年代左翼政治人物林清祥的研究文章。此外，一些既有的中文文章也由原作者以英文进行重写。
他指出，这些新内容为华社的历史进程提供了不同的审视角度，提出本地华社早在莱佛士开埠之前就已经形成，并与各地华人结成了既深且广的交流网络，由此衍生出了本地华社的独特文化和身份认同。
李显龙总理、国际知名历史学者王赓武教授和宗乡总会名誉会长蔡天宝也分别为英文版写序。社会及家庭发展部长兼国家发展部第二部长李智陞也以主宾身份受邀出席了新书发布会。
宗乡总会会长陈奕福致辞时强调，围绕着“以史为鉴，开创未来”的目标，他希望通过出书，让新一代国人从中了解到先贤们为建国而付出的奋斗和奉献，传承先贤的精神。

2019年6月24日，新加坡宗乡会馆联合总会（以下简称新加坡宗乡总会）联合世界科技出版公司共同推出了《新加坡华人通史》（英文版，A General History of the Chinese in Singapore），作为纪念新加坡开埠200年的献礼。这是继2015年新加坡宗乡总会为庆祝新加坡建国50周年暨该会成立30周年出版华文版《新加坡华人通史》后出版的又一本重要的历史著作。
华文版：第一部以华文撰写的华人通史
2015年宗乡总会出版的华文版《新加坡华人通史》由新加坡历史学者柯木林担任主编，动员了新、马、中、港、澳（洲）37位学者和文史工作者共同编撰完成，全书厚达800多页，字数约80多万字，共斥资近20万新币完成，是新加坡第一部以华文书写的新加坡华人通史，新加坡总理李显龙在主持该书的发布仪式时说“它是献给华社的一份珍贵的礼物”。
《新加坡华人通史》是介于学 术与通俗之间的历史专著，内容涵盖广，从开埠前的“古代新加坡”到建国后的经济转型；从华人上层社会的领袖人物到普通民众的生活面貌；从落叶归根的华侨到落地生根的新加坡华人；从文化认同、政治觉醒到本 土意识的萌芽、茁壮和成长，以及宗教、文学、美术、影视及表演艺术等方面均有涉及。这本书的各章节以新华社会的各个方面为主题作专题论述，通过对各个主题的疏理，来勾画出新加坡华人社会的全貌。
为了能全方位，多角度的诠释历史，《新加坡华人通史》的编委会成员包括了历史学者、大学教授、文学研究者、人类学者、古建筑学家、翻译工作者和报人等。参与撰写的作者也包括了新加坡本地学者和国外学者，既有学术成就斐然的年长学者， 也有崭露头角的年青学者。全书采用了图文并茂的形式，编委会精心选择了300多幅插图，除基本图片外，很多图片都是未 经发表过的。全书采用彩色印刷，丰富的图片资料增强了此书的可读性， 从视觉上让读者了解新加坡华人社会的历史。
华文版《新加坡华人通史》一经出版便获得很好的反响，首印3000本很快售罄。华文版的热烈反响也促使新加坡宗乡总会开始计划出版该书的英文版，以便扩大读者群，使不谙华文的读者也能了解新加坡华人的历史。
英文版：全新编撰 更全面的视角
今年6月，全新的《新加坡华人通史》（英文版）终于成功面世。这本书由擅长新加坡古代史研究的国大客座教授柯宗元和华文版主编柯木林共同担任主编，26位作者和7位翻译员联合撰写。李显龙总理、国际知名历史学者王赓武教授、宗乡总会名誉会长蔡天宝和会长陈奕福也为英文版写了序。全书有1004页左右，共有18章38篇文章，平均每篇文章配有5幅插图，图文并茂。
英文版的《新加坡华人通史》并不是华文版的翻译版本，而是在华文版的基础上，翻译了一小部分内容，加入了很多重新编著和新增的内容。考虑到英文版读者多是英文教育背景、其他友族和国际读者，编委会重新编排了全书内容，邀请多位擅长双语的学者撰写了相关章节。同时，编委会也结合中文版收到的反馈意见，对英文版进行修订，使内容更加严谨完善。
英文版的《新加坡华人通史》揭示了一些新加坡华社族群非常重要但又鲜为人知的贡献，并且深入地探讨了新加坡 1819 年之后的历史。同时，这本著作透过那些错综复杂的历史事件，以及先贤们的经历，讨论来自中国、槟城、马六甲和廖内群岛的华人是如何汇聚于新加坡，并和这里的其他族群一起奋斗，与当时的政府共同创建家园，制定可持续性的政策，为新加坡今天的经济发展和政治转型打造坚固的基础。
出版机构表示，英文版《新加坡华人通史》的主要目标是“以史为鉴，开创未来”（Pride in our Past, Legacy for our Future），希望这本书能让年轻一代深入了解新加坡华人的历史，了解先辈们艰苦创业，建设家园的奋斗故事，从这些历史和故事中了解先贤们的奋斗和奉献的精神，希望他们能有所启发，将这种精神传承下去。
中国版：入选中国2018年度“百佳”图书
华文版的《新加坡华人通史》出版后，也引起了中国出版界的关注，多家出版社与新加坡宗乡总会洽谈购买版权事宜，最后交由福建人民出版社出版。 2017年12月，《新加坡华人通史》海外版由福建人民出版社引进，在中国出版。
与新加坡版的《新加坡华人通史》不同，中国版不再是大型的单行本，而是分为上下两册，总页数超过 1000页。中国版《新加坡华人通史》由福建人民出版社重新设计排版，内容与新加坡版一致。首印1000本，主要供研究新加坡历史、华人华侨的专家学者参考阅读。 2018年底，《中华读书报》揭晓了2018年度“百佳”图书，《新加坡华人通史》（海外版）入选历史和传记类好书20种。

Seeking escape from unrest and poverty, waves of emigrants from China’s southern coast set off for foreign lands. Some crossed the ocean to the United States; others stayed closer to home, heading to nearby Southeast Asia. Many of Singapore’s ethnic Chinese citizens are descendants of these immigrants and others who followed in their wake, similarly propelled by China’s shifting political tides.
But other Chinese sojourners arrived in Southeast Asia much earlier. In A General History of the Chinese in Singapore – a new book that is the brainchild of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) – it is these travellers and their descendants who emerge as an intriguing strand of Singapore’s shifting narrative, highlighting the complex dynamics within the multiracial city state’s Chinese community.
Today, about 74 per cent of Singapore’s 4 million-strong resident population is Chinese, while the rest are of other ethnicities such as Malay, Indian and Eurasian.
Existing scholarship suggests Chinese traders had been travelling to the region since at least the 14th century, and it is likely those who assimilated with locals were the ancestors of the hybrid community known as Peranakans. By the time the British arrived in Singapore in the 19th century, Peranakans had been in the region for generations. As compradors, they became intermediaries between the new colonial order and existing regional networks of trade, and were co-opted into British systems of education and political participation. Many built up business empires and left enduring legacies as community leaders.

This annotated version contains additional biographical information and “accurate references to the source material used by Song in his compilation of the work”.

《联合早报》- 获颁公共服务奖章 柯宗元助国家图书馆构建新加坡东南亚资料 (2020-08-14)

为国家图书馆指引战略方向，并定位为新加坡和东南亚资料研究中心，国家图书馆采购委员会主席柯宗元获颁公共服务奖章。
国家图书馆管理局告诉《联合早报》，历史学者柯宗元2011年至2013年出任国家图书馆咨询委员会主席，随后继续以委员身份服务至2017年。“他向图书馆提供宝贵见解，如何通过构建特别收藏及采购稀有资料，让国家图书馆成为新加坡及东南亚资料的研究中心。他也协助制定了稀有资料的收藏指引，从而组建了稀有资料采购委员会，对国家收藏这些资料的决定进行审核。”
图书管理局说，身为采购委员会主席的柯宗元不吝于分享他在收集新加坡和东南亚历史资料数十年的经验，也对国家图书馆举办的展览提供了反馈和建议，并倡议设立图书馆研究员职务。
柯宗元也推动国家图书馆将各图书馆和机构的新加坡和东南亚馆藏整合到统一的目录，以便让人更深入、全面地了解馆藏情况。
图书管理局指出，柯宗元还呼吁国家图书馆更专注于学术出版、并提供出版主题和范围的想法，“为国家图书馆当前的出版工作奠定坚实的基础和方向”。
柯宗元受访时说：“我很高兴能为国家图书馆咨询委员会服务，也很荣幸能获国庆奖章褒奖。”
他指出，奖章认可的是图书馆的工作人员为建立丰富馆藏和提供范围更广的服务所做的工作，“我只是提出一点建议。”
